Moonlit Words

Sometimes I wonder if the moon knows my name or heart,
As I bask in his light, from night to night, and spill my secrets out across the stars.
I’d like to think, within that ink, that welling blackness of the sky,
He has written out a line or two for me that can’t be seen by the naked eye.
Where he’s encased, in that fragile space, so ever far from here,
Maybe he’s laid out an extravagant tale, a ethereal love story for the years,
For us, and for all that was, and also for all that he has ever seen.
But I sigh, knowing he’s not alive, has no ears or eyes, and doesn’t know a thing.
Yet, I still wonder, when the sky is clear with no clouds in the way,
That if he was living, what words he’d have for this world he could never say.

Author Notes

I tried to write something lovingly romantic for a Valentine's Day poem, but I wound up romanticizing the moon instead and am not even disappointed.

Rachel, no matter what, the moon has been romanticized over the centuries. We cannot take that role away from it. Many a confession has been made before the moon. At least the moon does not reveal our secrets. ~ Sonia

He'd pay you the ...
... nicest compliments telling you how wonderful and special you are...and you are! Only 'Mother Nature will tell you so in all honesty. Enjoyed this piece. Thanks!

history of the moon
Beautiful use of the moon as an evocative device. Generations come and go, wars, lovers in his moonlight, and if he were alive he had watched it all but stayed the same. He lit the sky for tragedy and beauty. It is as black as ink between the stars and does the universe know we exist. I believe the Creator of the universe most certainly knows everyone who has ever existed. What is the moon through the eyes of a wolf or orca. Does it inflame the heart of beast as well as man or is it just a shiny disc, a light.
