Edward Burra Crucifixion

For John Selway

Once more the stretching

Begins, the mannered role-play.

How much more to bear?

The shaping of skin, reshaping of self.

The arms point outwards

And the knees are raised, strange

Golgotha of prostration

Though the face, not the body

Communicates the trauma now

As the priest looks down

Down on the sacrifice of it

The icon weeping tears.

Author Notes

An elegy for the leading Welsh painter John Selway, who died recently, and who was also, like Burra, renowned for his meditations on the Crucifixion.
