                                                           THE HILLS OF MARCH

                                                            MARY HAZEL HENSON

white birch trees dancing
in the quivering sun
high on the hills of March

Author's Note: I wrote this poem in April 1972. Henson was my maiden name. Mama had the poem carefully cut out of the envelope of one of the letters that I'd sent her. She had written on the bottom of the scrap of paper "4-5-72". The poem was preserved in one of the books of my letters that she had made and saved. The original poem was untitled, but is otherwise the same as what I wrote.

Author Notes

Mama saved many of my other old poems and books of poetry that I had written in notebooks. Thanks to her, I will be able to publish them all eventually. Mama saved the only copies of them still in existence. I am publishing this poem under my maiden name of Henson, rather than my married name of Upton, because I feel like the poem belongs to the young woman who wrote it so long ago, not me, and she would like to see her name in print.

Mary, I can see the "white birch trees dancing in the quivering sun." Your poem packs a lot within a small space. All the best with your creative endeavors.

What a lovely story, Mary.
I wish someone had kept all my old notebooks.
Thanks for sharing.
Best ~ Abra
