MY NON FICTION WRITING ODDESSEY
MY NON-FICTION WRITING ODDESSY

Truth is often stranger than fiction. My father died when I was only ten years old. I was with him that evening. He suffered from practically all the respiratory illnesses, some of which was not even labeled at that time probably from smoking unfiltered cigarettes and stogies. He was a New England fisherman and in my opinion, a man’s man. Every evening after dinner and mostly on weekends he would write some poetry which he generically called “Sketches”. They were poems about love, family and philosophy. I was with him when he wrote his last poem which ironically was an elegy for himself and was entitled, “When I’m Gone”. He died that evening after writing that poem. Perhaps this is the reason why I majored in English. I was not considered a good student in college but I loved to write and would occasionally make an A in my major.
I only taught one year of English in High School and went on to other endeavors.
I never really found my niche in life and one could safely call me a flounderer. My incessant restlessness in life was unbridled and it cost me three marriages and several careers. I was always on a journey of some kind and traveled around the world always seeking. I never really knew what I was seeking but it seems like I just wanted to find a horizon. No sooner would I locate one horizon, I would seek out another; this I came to find out later was what someone would call “The Flying Dutchman Syndrome”.
In my youth, I always wrote but never published. It wasn’t until a lot of the restlessness was expiated that I decided to take writing and publishing a little more seriously; by then I was almost fifty years old. I decided to write about my experience and wisdom I attained from traveling to India. In 1997 I published my first book, MYSTERIES: Ancient & Modern by an Indian publisher which is almost in its third edition. I finally married for the fourth and final time I hope to a very bright woman of considerable talent herself who wrote the forward to two of my books. I dedicated two poetry books to her: Sonnets For Sonnets’ Sake and A Collection of Verse and Villanelles. Those books are PODS or publish on demand books and so far I haven’t made any money from them. There are many more books I am going to write and there is nothing that will discourage me from doing so.
Perhaps you too are on an odyssey of some kind. Life is indeed a journey and is worth chronicling. My New England father left the family and me a legacy of simple verse that we treasure today. It certainly is a cure for restlessness to sit down and put your thoughts on paper. I no longer look for physical horizons and because I write, I feel that horizons only exist as a marker on the journey to the infinite. May we all be blessed by what you have to say

Sounds like a chronicle of your life. You've certainly got what it takes to make a good writer. I'm looking forward to reading your poems.
