The Fish Tail Song

Fish tail, fish tail
-Oh not a girl's foolish braided hair-
It comes, it goes
Perhaps we're above the mermaids' lair

Stuck at sea, never free
But we had seen more than the sunsets
We see, we saw
The beautiful creatures near our nets

Golden scale, golden scale
-No not the fucker you use to weigh fish-
It glints, it winks
Perhaps we should try our lucks and wish

We can look, we can't touch
The glorious breathing treasure
Lucky, honored
We, the sailormen of the azure

Fish tale, fish tale
-No, not the legend of the clownfish's journey-
Half-fish, half-goddess
Perhaps she's choosing the man she'll marry

Author Notes

NaPoWriMo prompt: "Write a sea shanty: poems in the forms of songs, strongly rhymed and rhythmic, that sailors might sing while hauling on ropes and performing other sea-going labors."

Helpful? Thumbs UpThumbs Down
A good old sea shanty very refreshing I think you let it down by the swear word in the third stanz it wasn't needed and will narrow your audience change one word and make a very good poem an excellent one

I was trying to put the sailor feel by putting a seemingly tough word. Now when I think about it, the tone is playful and then that word pops out. Hmm...yeah, good point. Thank you for the review.
