Awaiting Spring
The new spring budding in wild places
Vibrant green in this warming breeze
The birds sing away winter’s last traces
Fleeting farewell to dawn’s frosting freeze
Night creatures issue their lovesick cries
Hooting, howling and many a trilling call
Ever so loud shortly after the campfire dies
Until dawn, when sleep claims them all
By mid-morning all is loud again
The warbling songs of lovesick birds
Courting, tail feathers spread like a fan
Well worthy of these rhyming words
Courtship, copulation and young to raise
Buds to flowers and flowers to fruit
A wild green place to spend my days
As no other place, for me would suit
A sweet cloying scent is in the air
Good Mother Nature’s fertile season
Issue your own wild call if you dare
For love or no other particular reason
For those with no love this coming spring
Perch well and lift your heads in song
Expect not to know what evening brings
Or with who and where you belong
