BALTHROP ALABAMA
AT THE BUG JAR

A backdrop of paper bugs in a round flying motion
attached to a short spiked circulating fan.
They order a black Russian or some other potion
before entering the back room to hear the band.

Strange colored artwork hangs on the wall
with naked figurines with too many limbs
An unusual decor for a corner dance hall
as paying fans wait for music to begin.

White picket fences align the stage
holding the announcement of the name.
The acoustic and light show soon to engage
as dancers shuffle for a spot to claim.

The first rhythms begin to emerge
as the initial notes tune to the meter.
As saxophones and guitars converge
in this atmosphere suited for the reaper.

He begins to sing with mature dulcet tones
reminiscent of John Lennon and Phil Ochs
A song of intelligent political satire
way beyond the thinking of some folks.

A song of God and Country in unusual persuasion
Another telling the stories of young death.
A Father and daughter at a beach occasion.
And still another about the explosive end of earth.

She begins to sing a tone of similar timber
a sweetness with the range of wide experience.
In hot pants and red boots dancing to the number
a contemporary folk/country/rock appearance.

Fabulous energy, affinity and synergism
these band members exhibit as they perform.
Audience dancing along with no criticism
like nothing they've ever heard in any dorm.

While the music burns in colorful array
an artist illustrates stories of the lyric.
Using pen and ink he demonstrates
with a unique and stylized cartoon graphic.

A typical evening of honing their craft
at the Bug Jar in scenic panorama.
A successful first performance visit
The incomparable Balthrop Alabama.

(Author's note: I had the great privledge of attending the last stop on
Balthrop Alabama's Summer 2010, North East US tour and was
blown away by the music, energy and intelligent lyric of this
contemporary sister/brother and friends NYC band. I encourage
the reader to become familiar. Here is a link for your

You provide a wealth of detail for the reader in this piece, almost as if I was attending the gig myself. I think if you're honest you'll agree that some of your rhyme scheme might be improved, but that barely detracts from the poem's effectiveness. All things considered, this was a good read and I enjoyed the peek into what must have been a great night out.
